From the choices of suitcases, to the way you pack. Everything requires preparations to avoid the unforeseen accidents or forgetting of something really important.
Before all that it comes down to choosing your suitcase.
What most of us tend to do is, head down to the nearest mall and grab something that looks nice and is within our budget. Or maybe we might just go for the ones with the major discounts.
There isn't really a well defined criteria, but here is a short list you might want to consider before getting that suitcase.
- Will it be able to protect the contents in it from damage?
- Will it survive your destination environment?
- Is it suitable for you? Your style, personality?
- Does it make you look good? Are you comfortable with it?
Sometimes one just isn't enough. You might need a bag for that laptop you're bringing along. Or it could be a major difference in climate and you might just need that extra clothing.
It's a good idea to get a suitcase with side compartment where you could store something you might need in hand. This is to prevent you from digging out everything at the last minute just to grab onto something you need that's located deep within everything.
Let's say a pair of sandals or beach footwear. You might feel the rush once you've reached your destination to step onto the sand but it's not really a good idea to dig everything out for just a pair of sandals.
We would always come to the point where, how much is too much? And how little is too little?
It's always a good idea to make a list at least a week or a few days before you start the packing. Because there will always be those moments where you might want to bring something and it will always be forgotten till you've check into your flight.
Here's a way to really maximize space. Do a check over the place where you're accommodating. Check for the facilities and services they provide.
For example, if they provide beach towels then you won't have to pack your own heavy and bulky beach towels.
Here's two more ways to maximize space.
- Roll, Not Fold
A trick from one traveler to another. Rolled clothes are less creased. And it saves space. (Just imagine it as a brick game, we're always looking for that 1 long straight piece of block to fill up the empty space.) - Pack Light, Wear Heavy
You might want to consider wearing your heaviest clothes instead of packing them. Wear jeans, trainers, heavy jumpers; even coats. You don't have to wear them; you can carry them and store them in the luggage holds in the aircraft. It could save you valuable space and weight in your case!
